[Commlist] CFP: Narrating the nonhuman
Tue Jan 16 10:09:15 GMT 2024
Call for Papers: Narrating the nonhuman
Hosted by Centre for Human Animal Studies (CfHAS) Post-Graduate Researchers
Dates: 30th-31st May 2024
Online and in-person event.
Location: Edge Hill University, St. Helens Road, L39 4QP.
Narratives are powerful. They are also changeable. Narratives can
promote empathy, action and awareness, but can also normalise
misconceptions and mistreatment of the more-than-human. They can be
coercive, and often need to be challenged, improved, and/or preserved.
This year’s symposium focuses on the topic of narratives as a
multifaceted way to relate to the nonhuman. We ask: How can narratives
influence our understanding of the nonhuman? What impact can they have
on real nonhuman beings? In what ways can they be seen as empowering
resources? When and for which purposes do they preserve imbalances of
power among humans and between humans and nonhuman animals? The main aim
is to explore the intersections of animal studies across disciplines and
their different ways of approaching and merging with this field. The
CfHAS PGRs are encouraging post-graduates to discuss the topic of
narratives from different research perspectives. Both creatives and new
academics such as MA, MSc, MRes, PhD students and researchers with work
in progress projects are welcome.
Given the hybrid nature of the event, both online and in-person
presentations are welcome.
Edge Hill University’s CfHAS PGR members are inviting fellow
Postgraduate Researchers across arts, humanities, social sciences and
related fields to submit research papers, creative writing, film and
media content, performances and/or workshop proposals.
Vegan lunch and refreshments will be provided. Participants will be
informed of on-campus and off-campus restaurants and bars offering
plant-based options.
