*The Communication and Society call for papers  with the theme’ Communication and Science’ is open from September 30, 2026,  to December 15, 2026*

Editors: Madalena Oliveira (CECS, University of Minho, Portugal), Sandra Marinho (CECS, University of Minho, Portugal) and Ángel Carrasco-Campos (University of Valladolid, Spain)

Far from being limited to the communication of scientific results or the dissemination of science to non-specialist audiences, the relationship between communication and science encompasses the very conditions under which knowledge is produced, legitimised, published, funded, evaluated and contested. It also entails recognising the dual nature of communication processes: on the one hand, indeed, as a practice of sharing, transferring and publicising scientific work; on the other, as an object of research in its own right.

In a context characterised by the acceleration of information flows, the growing importance of digital platforms, disinformation and the erosion of trust in institutions, the interplay between two activities so central to contemporary societies is particularly sensitive. Whilst science is driven by the imperative to make an impact and to inform, influence or promote political, economic, environmental and public health decisions, communication serves as a key catalyst for strengthening relationships and forging connections and bonds that are just as crucial to development as the outcomes of scientific activity.

This special issue of ‘Communication and Society’ aims to bring together contributions that explore the various dimensions of science communication, understood in a broad and interdisciplinary sense. We welcome papers analysing practices, discourses, mediations, policies and communicational ecosystems associated with the production, circulation and reception of scientific knowledge, as well as the transformations that challenge the relationships between science, the media, technology and society.

This call for papers welcomes articles of a theoretical, empirical or methodological nature, from the field of communication studies or other disciplines that contribute to deepening the debate on this area of research.
