Monographic section issue 51. Communication, health, and well-being

Issue 51 of Quaderns del CAC devotes its monographic section to disseminating theoretical considerations and empirical studies on communication, health, and well-being.

Communication on health and well-being plays a fundamental role in our societies. On the one hand, this information can help raise awareness about risks and problems that directly affect our physical and mental health. On the other hand, the dissemination of scientific research promotes knowledge, an essential function; given that health communication is also affected by denialist and conspirator movements.

Quality health and well-being communication can benefit both social and personal life. For a health campaign to work or to explain the importance of following healthy behaviours there must be a receptive public opinion. In this respect, quality communication plays an essential role.

In this monograph, we want to collect scientific papers on the quality and social impact of the contents circulating on health and well-being. The aim is to collect proposals around information, entertainment, fiction, and persuasive communication.

The following is an indicative and open list of possible topics of interest:

-Science journalism. The social, economic, and technological contexts affect the quality of journalism today. Science journalism, which is especially relevant in health and wellness communication, is also affected.

-Audiences: Is there an interest in health issues? What sources of information do citizens use? What is the public opinion on health and well-being information? What challenges are involved in communication aimed at a multicultural society?

-Regulation and professional deontology in the treatment of health and well-being topics. To what extent do regulation and professional codes of conduct contribute to increasing the quality of communication? What are their strengths and weaknesses?

-News coverage of health issues, including mental health. What are the social imaginaries generated by news communication on health and wellness? Do they foster any stereotype or self-stereotype?

-Pseudoscientific and false information. Given the importance of communication on health and well-being, it is essential to know how, by whom, and through which channels spread pseudoscientific and false information, as well as its effects and its ability to influence.

-Gender-sensitive information. Society is beginning to debate the differences between men and women regarding symptoms of illnesses and responses to treatment, but how is this debate reflected in current communication?

-Information in health emergencies. Now that the pandemic caused by COVID-19 has overcome, it is of interest those in-depth works about how this health crisis was dealt with, in terms of information and, especially, those that provide ideas applicable to any emergency.

-Visibility of rare diseases. Do the media talk about rare diseases? Which diseases and in what depth?

-Informative content. In the history of television, informative programs on sex education have stood out, but we are interested in studies on current trends concerning themes and formats. Podcasting seems to be emerging as a good way of dissemination, but also video games.

-Persuasive communication around health, including institutional campaigns. We are interested in papers that suggest ideas on how communication can stimulate healthy habits. Of interest are articles on classic issues - such as the effectiveness of road safety campaigns - and emerging ones, such as how to tackle smoking or pornography consumption among young people.

-Fiction and medicine. Focused not only on studies of TV series based on health issues, the main plot of which takes place in hospitals, but also on how cinema and creative documentaries talk about health and well-being.

-The role of influencers. The digital environment broadens the scope and echo of content and allows for the interconnection of multiple voices. We are interested in studies that analyze what types of messages circulate well-being and health and what consequences or effects they have on people's lives, as well as work on the characteristics and profiles of influencers.

-The representation of older people in health and well-being communication. We are interested in papers that address this question by focusing on issues such as ageism or the prominence of youthful values in today's society.

-Communication on care and self-care. We are interested in the analysis of the communicative treatment of care and self-care in news content. It is an essential topic in studies with a feminist perspective, but how is it seen from a communication perspective?
