[Commlist] New Book: The Maltese Newspapers and the Second World War

Mon Sep 05 14:11:57 GMT 2022

New book "The Front Page on the Front Line: The Maltese Newspapers and the Second World War".

This work is an analysis of the role of the newspapers in Malta during the war, especially the role of the Strickland family of politicians-cum-media moguls, the question of pro-Italian sympathisers in Malta, how the newspapers responded to the challenges of production in wartime, and the role of newspapers in wartime propaganda.

The chapter on propaganda constitutes half of the book and is ground-breaking analysis of this aspect of the war, since during the years most attention had been dedicated to military and strategic aspects of Malta as a vital British island-fortress in the campaigns for the Mediterranean and North Africa. Malta is considered the most heavily-bombed place on earth during WWII, even more than the Blitz, and was awarded the George Cross in 1942.
