We have an ECU PhD scholarship available for 2020-2022 inclusive, associated with our ARC Discovery Project, *DP190102435, Adolescents’ perceptions of harm from accessing online sexual content.*

To be eligible, an applicant must:

  * be an Australian citizen or Permanent Resident
  * commit to full-time work on the PhD research for a minimum of three
    years, beginning between January 1 and March 1 2020, subject to
    scholarship conditions (Scholarship conditions are at

  * have an undergraduate degree in Communications and Media Studies,
    Cultural Studies, Education, Psychology or the Humanities, Arts and
    Social Sciences or cognate areas
  * have been awarded or demonstrate progress towards an Honours degree,
    a Master’s degree or alternatively be able to demonstrate capacity
    combined with relevant experience
  * provide evidence of collaborative and effective team membership
  * be available to work in the evenings, at weekends and during school
    holidays as required to accommodate interviewee availability
  * hold or be able to obtain a WA Working with Children Check card and
    a WA Police Clearance
  * successfully be accepted into ECU’s higher degree by research
    program (this is a separate process, details can be found at

The area of the PhD research will be negotiated with the successful applicant and their thesis topic will be located in the area of either:

  * parents’ perceptions of harm experienced by adolescents’ access to
    sexual content online

or

  * adolescents’ perceptions of harm experienced by adolescents’ access
    to sexual content online.

(Please note that the research does not assume that either group will necessarily perceive harm; this is part of the enquiry)

The PhD candidate will be an integral part of the overall research team and will contribute research to support the ARC project publications, deliverables and outcomes as well as fulfilling the requirements of their thesis.

This is an ideal position for someone who would like to explore the career of an academic researcher. Two researchers who have held equivalent roles with Professor Lelia Green at ECU subsequently went on to win ARC Discovery Early Career Research Awards.

Selection process for appointment (subject to acceptance into the ECU PhD program and the eligibility conditions)

    perceptions of accessing adult content online
 3. 250 words on your current construction of parents’ perceptions of
    teens’ access to adult content online
 4. 200 words on what you perceive to be the most challenging aspects of
    this project
 5. 150 words on how winning this PhD scholarship fits into your future
    career goals.

_3. The following statement written in your everyday, exam condition handwriting (in case you are shortlisted for the research aptitude test)_

Most Australians have accessed online sexual content by age 16 and 36% of 9-16s say they felt bothered by it. The benefit hoped from this project is a reduction in possible harm perceived by Australians aged 12-17. Comparing Australia with Greece, Ireland and Norway, this research seeks community engagement via outputs such as policy briefings, submissions, media commentary and in delivering a teen-informed evidence-base. It is expected that the project, directly engaging with adolescents, parents and representative data, will inform policy and research through qualitative and cross-cultural insights. Benefits include risk reduction strategies for supporting Australian adolescents who may feel bothered by having accessed online sexual media.

*The following processes will be used to identify the successful candidate from the shortlist. *

a)An in-person or online interview (typically 30 minutes)

b)A timed, exam-condition 45-minute aptitude test.

Details will be provided nearer the time and it is a requirement that the work be done in real time and without using a computer.
