      Background

The academic research project ART/DATA/HEALTH creates an innovative and 
interdisciplinary process that offers disadvantaged groups and the 
public new tools, at the intersections of data science with art 
practice, to approach two key issues in healthy aging and 
prevention: digital skills and health literacy.

The//project uses health data as the source of experiential stories 
and as the source material for creative expression. In a series of 
exploratory workshops, a community of artists, academics and members of 
disadvantaged population will use a combination of creative media, 
storytelling and data analytics to explore evidence around health in 
their local communities. They will co-produce creative work that takes 
various forms using both anonymised personal and open statistical health 
data.

Data-based art can help raise awareness about the ethical, social and 
cultural issues of personalised medicine, but is however still missing 
from public health, community-based initiatives. Data representations 
can help stakeholders comprehend large amounts of data and identify 
patterns.

supported by a UK Research Innovation/ Arts and Humanities Research 
Council Leadership Fellowship Grant.

    Commissions for data-based art (min 2)

As part of the project /ART/DATA/HEALTH: data as creative material for 
health and wellbeing/ we are inviting artist proposals for major 
commissions. We are interested in ambitious proposals that offer a 
unique perspective on health and wellbeing data and strongly connect to 
the themes of the ART/DATA/HEALTH project (digital inclusion, health 
inequalities). You will have experience in working with communities and 
an interest/or experience in working with data.

The selection criteria are:

・ How original your proposed project is

・ How suitable it is for community-based art

・ How you envisage to work with the communities to co-produce the artwork

・ How you hope to connect with audiences from these communities

・ How you aim to connect with the Brighton Fringe Festival audiences


In addition to some of the venues and locations used for the Brighton 
Fringe, the ART/DATA/HEALTH art projects may be able to secure other 
indoor and outdoor spaces for the presentation of site-specific artworks.

Main commissions include:

● Project budget of up to £5,200 to include 18 days of work of which 2 
days of co-production workshops, all expenses, fees and materials

● Up to 2 nights accommodation (based on single person)

● Use of University of Brighton space during project development

● Use of the University of Brighton 3D printing facilities if needed

● Support from the research project team before, and after the Festival

● Marketing and Technical support

● Professional documentation of the work

Eligibility:

Application is open to creative individuals, pairs or groups at any 
stage of their career, who are currently based in the UK. Preference 
will be given to artists local in the Brighton and Hove/ and wider 
Sussex area. Applicants do not need to possess a degree in a creative 
subject but must be able to demonstrate a track record of creative 
activity. Applicants must be over 18 and not in full time education.

● A written proposal (500 words max), clearly and concisely describing 
the project you wish to produce, the ideas behind it and how the budget 
will be spent,

● Up to three images that illustrate the concepts behind your proposal,

● Artist Statement (200 words max),

● Up to three images or links to video of previous work,

● CV (no more than 2 sides of A4),

● Contact details including name, phone number and website address.

If you have any disability that would preclude you from submitting an 
application in this format, we welcome a video submission (7 mins max).
